Congo's M23 Rebels End Rebellion

The Democratic Republic of Congo's M23 rebel group declared an end to its 20-month rebellion on Tuesday and said it was ready to disarm, demobilize troops and pursue a political solution to end the crisis in the east of the country.

The M23 declaration was issued hours after government forces drove the rebel fighters out of their last two strongholds.

The M23 rebellion was began in April 2012 by military deserters not satisfied with the Kinshasa government's handling of a 2009 peace accord dismantling a previous militia. After violence broke out last year, the rebels managed to seize the city of Goma, but were quickly pushed out. Over 800,000 people have been displaced by fighting with the M23.
